Lots of Commitments come to an End!
In the past, I’ve served on a board, committee or project and all of these things have come to an end for one reason or another. For example, I served on the Pool Board for 3 years – but that is the length of time required to serve and this was the last year of this commitment. I was on PTA, but because of issues at school, we thought it best not to focus on the political side of things, but step back and just enjoy life. Always in the past we’ve taught Sunday School or run a Bible Study – but with Church Field Trips, that has not left room for this commitment. This year I co-chaired the preschool auction for the 2nd time, but that commitment is essentially done. Basically the formal commitments have gone to the back burner. It feels strange to not have a say in every little thing I can possibly have a say in, but I am learning the art of not having an opinion. If I’m not involved in PTA, I really can’t complain about the school. I think I am learning that life is very fun when I’m not focused on as much.

This does not mean I’m not doing anything. In fact I always joke that it is amazing that this year I’m not doing anything because I am SOOOOO Busy!!! I parent help every week in either Kaitlyn’s and Mikaela’s classroom and once a month in Courtney’s class. I am helping put together the school yearbook, which takes me back to my high school days. I just volunteered to help organize a woman’s retreat through my Bible study group. I still attend my woman’s Bible study. This year we are studying the Old Testament. I am being very challenged by my leaders and the other participants in my group. Usually I try to find one day to go do lunch with

a friend or two and all of this is on top of the normal responsibilities of groceries, laundry and paying bills. I really thought that with all the committee stuff on the back burner, I’d have time to go to Fort Collins to see my folks or maybe spend a day or two in Denver with my sister. So far, I haven’t had one of those days.
Once the kids get out of school, I find myself focused on their lives. I drive the kids to gymnastics, art or violin practice or I find myself hosting lots of kids after school. As of this month I am a new Brownie leader for Mikaela’s troop. In my marriage vows I’m

pretty sure I said, “I promise to love, honor and respect Terry and I promise never to be a Brownie leader.” For those who knew me in my childhood – you know the HUGE shoes I have to fill in the department of being a girl-scout leader. I feel very impressed that I can handle 6 little girls with the help of my co-leader and friend. I can’t imagine my mom’s efforts when she was taking us on all of those trips and our garage was filled with Girl Scout cookies. We had our first meeting so far and the only problem I had was several of the girls were disappointed because they didn’t get to eat any brownies. I explained to them in the brownie circle that Girl Scouts is all about cookies and not brownies, but I couldn’t tell them why that was!
Lastly I keep myself busy with some additional little treats just for me. I play a game called Caravan once a month. It is very fun and every once in awhile I earn some money by playing the game (I’ve won once in the 1 1/2 years I’ve played). I was fortunate enough to be invited to join a book club this year. Again for those of you who know me well, you know that I don’t read much. The women I am in this group with are avid readers. I was amazed that they would let me do this group with them. I love the challenge of being forced to read so that I can contribute to a discussion once a month. I find that for the most part I love every book that I read. Every month I look forward to the next piece of literature the group chooses. I usually agree to anything because I’ve read so little!
