Loving Middle School and being a "Teen"
Kaitlyn: Kaitlyn likes everything although she is known to be a picky eater (Unless someone other than her mother makes the food!). If there is an activity going on at school, she will usually be participating in the activity. She goes to yearbook, knitting club, any and all intramural opportunities, Jr. Honor Society, battle of the books, and the list goes on and on. The more spur of the moment opportunities are the better for Katilyn. This summer in the midst of swimming for the Dolphins, she was asked to sub in for a softball team. Not ever really playing before she thought she’d give it a try. Next thing you know she is on the team and included in the team picture. She loves volleyball and although not the best, continues to do anything she can to be out on the court getting better. The same is true for playing the viola. She switched from violin to the viola and with the guidance of a really good orchestra teacher she continues to enjoy the challenge of this instrument. We are very proud of her. Kaitlyn loves doing well, but she is learning that the outcome of opportunities is not nearly as important as the process. One of the biggest examples of this was her season in track. Kaitlyn is a committed athlete, but at this stage of life, athletics will probably be more for entertainment than anything else. Track was fun, but she was not winning any races. As a result, she looked at the hurdles and thought it looked hard and why not. Again, this didn’t earn her any ribbons, but she just wanted the experience of giving it her best. Her willingness to try and have fun and take risk is an inspiration.

Kaitlyn is thriving in her classes. Her teachers love teaching her because she loves to learn. At conferences, One teacher said, “If I had a classroom of Kaitlyns to teach, I wouldn’t need to get paid!” Kaitlyn’s favorite classes include an advanced math class and a geography class that has inspired her to travel. When we asked her which are her favorites for this letter, she actually listed all of the classes. This says a lot for her teachers and the staff at Holmes Middle School. At church she goes to youth group where she is making some really good friends and she find choir very cool. Kaitlyn also would spend her weekends skiing if she had a choice and if not skiing she would babysit. This is a kid who will have a car paid for before she reaches 16 just because of her ability to save! We are thrilled to have our oldest going down a path that seems to be the right direction!
